Bretan, Peter Mason

Junior, Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts

Advisor: David Borgo, Music

Project:

Communicating abstract sound through Cochlear Implants

Understanding the perception of music through the use of cochlear implants and realizing how such a perception can influence music in general.

Browning, Sage

Senior, Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts

Advisor: Jurgen Schulze, Calit2

Project:

Portia

The aim of Portia is to develop a low cost, high accuracy method of three dimensional location tracking that can be constructed with commonly available parts, and set up with relative ease. Portia is intended to be used as an interface for a matrix of computer displays, named OptiPortal, also developed at CALIT2.

Capelis, DJ

Junior, Computer Science

Advisor: Alex Orailoglu, CSE

Project:

Protecting Application Data without a Trusted Software Stack

Work on a system which provides security on a trusted device without reliance on the security of the underlying software stack. This type of system could allow secure computation on public computing infrastructure, mobile devices and other types of systems where the operating system may not be secure.

Dooraghi, Alex

Senior, Physics

Advisor: Prab Bandaru, MAE

Project:

Accurate measurement of the thermal conductivity of nanostructured thermoelectric materials for energy harvesting application

The determination of thermal conductivity of nanostructures, in addition to its scientific importance, is applicable to characterization of heat utilization efficiency and energy conversion. My objective is to develop a thermal conductivity measurement system for nanoscale devices, based on the 3-omega method.

Fanchiu, Isabelle

Sophomore, Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts

Advisor: Janos Negyesy, Music

Project:

The Electronic Violin Project

The purpose of this project is to experiment with interaction between two electronic violins and develop a compositional model themed after information technology and telecommunications. The product of this summer's work will be a performance at CalIT2, demonstrating not only the new electronic violin composition but some of the unique features of the Calit2 auditorium.

Freed, Anna

Sophomore, Bioengineering

Advisor: Bradley Messmer, UCSD Moores Cancer Center

Project:

Immunostimulation of Dendritic Cells Using Single Stranded DNA Nanoparticles with CpG sequences

Rolling circle amplification is used to create nanoparticles which consist of long single stranded DNA of an immunogenic sequence, specifically, a CpG sequence. The ssDNA coils into a spherical nanoparticle structure which will stimulate the patients own immune system to rid itself of cancer.

Gu, Jia

Senior, Art History

Advisor: Lev Manovich, Visual Arts

Project:

New Software Interfaces for Image Collections

My project objective is to design a new interface that maximizes usability of digital image collections based off current methods utilized in sites such as ArtStor, Flickr, Panoramio

Gupta, Utsav

Sophomore, Bioengineering

Advisor: Robert Sah, Bioengineering

Project:

Development of Image Processing Methods for the Quanitifcation of Immunohistochemical Staining: Applications to Cartilage Tissue Engineering

In cartilage tissue engineering for the treatment of OA, it is useful to stain for collagen I, II and VI to determine the extent of redifferentiation, a measure of how well the procedure worked, as well as the type and relative amount of matrix produced by chondrocytes. It would be useful to be able to measure the amount of staining and percentage of positive cells other than manual methods by the researcher; development of a method to evaluate immunohistochemical (IHC) results semi-quantitatively using an automated computer program which can evaluate images procedurally can make IHC an effective alternative for studying the results of cartilage tissue engineering.

Hon, Sylvia

Junior, Bioengineering

Advisor: David Gough, Bioengineering

Project:

Falling into Hypoglycemia Warning Device

My project involves researching on the versatile dynamics of hypoglycemia and how it can affect individuals differently. By doing so, I can identify specifications for an alarm device that can be tailored to each individual's needs, so the device can warn the hypoglycemic individual before his or her glucose level falls below a certain threshold.

Jurick, Sarah

Sophomore, Psychology

Advisor: Tony Yang, Psychiatry

Project:

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Personal Information Database

I intend to design a database that will encompass information from clinical data, genetic information, functional magnetic resonance information, and high-resolution anatomical functional for a sizable amount of patients. It will allow for easy access to this information, and a way to quickly add or edit information in the database.
